Red lentils originate from Turkey, but are an integral part of Indian cuisine. They are rich in vitamins, fibre, protein and minerals such as selenium, zinc, phosphorus and iron. Lentils are naturally gluten-free.

Red lentils are a complete protein and are very popular with vegetarians and vegans who like to substitute them for meat.

Lentils do not have a skin and therefore do not cause bloating problems like other types of lentils. Moreover, they do not need to be soaked beforehand and can be easily cooked and blended to make a smooth porridge.

Red lentils are ideal for thickening sauces, replacing pickles and making delicious savoury spreads. They can be used as a seasoning for hot and cold salads or roasted vegetables. They can be used to make soup. They are suitable for savoury pancakes, for example you can mix them with egg or grated cheese and fry them in a frying pan.

Recommended consumption:

Rinse the red lentils with water and add them to the pot. Cover the lentils with 1:2 water (one cup of lentils to two cups of water). Cook in an uncovered pot for about 7-12 minutes. The red lentils will turn slightly yellow when cooked. Add salt and stir.
