Latin name: Rosmarinus Officinalis
Part of the plant used: Flowering tops
Origin: Spain
Extraction method: Steam distillation
The essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowers, stems and leaves of the plant. The British Pharmacopoeia states that the oil distilled from the flowering tops is superior to that from the stem and leaves, from which almost all commercial oils are said to be distilled. Rosemary essential oil has a woody and herbal scent and is used in aromatherapy to refresh and stimulate the mind.
The oil is said to help treat wounds, burns, colds, flu, fatigue, indigestion, headaches, asthma, bronchitis, gout, rheumatism, liver and gall bladder problems, water retention and poor blood circulation. For massage, rosemary oil is often mixed with one or two base oils such as almond, apricot kernel or hazelnut oil. It is good for the hair as it is said to improve circulation to the scalp and promote hair growth. Never use this oil internally and avoid it if you are pregnant or suffer from high blood pressure or epilepsy.
Rosemary was well known and used in the ancient world. It was believed to improve memory, making it a symbol of loyalty and was used at weddings, funerals and other religious ceremonies. The rosemary sprig was tied beautifully with ribbons and given to the wedding guests as a symbol of love and loyalty. For the Queen of Hungary, 'Hungarian water' was made from fresh rosemary tops soaked in wine for several days and is said to have cured her of paralysis.
