Brass statue of Shiva Nataraja, two colours, 15 cm
Brass statue of Shiva Nataraja.
The colour is created by coating the statue with a two-tone lacquer, first with a copper-coloured layer and then with a gold-coloured layer.
Shiva is a divine Hindu personality. Shiva is the destroyer of all evil and is often depicted wearing a trident. Shiva is Parvati's husband and their son is Ganesh.
Shiva's cosmic dance Nataraj as the king of the dance (nata) (raja) is considered to be a symbol of the constantly moving universe. Shiva Nataraj is usually surrounded by an aura of flames, which provides protection from any disturbing external influences, but it also represents the fire of destruction of the old giving way to the new, symbolising the eternal cycle of existence. In his right hand he holds a small drum, an image of the rhythm of creation. His mantra is OM, the primordial sound from which all creation emerged. In his second right hand, Shiva holds a torch or flame, which symbolises destruction and renewal. The left hand is lowered down to symbolise compelling humility.
