Bauhinia variegata is a species of flowering plant in the legume family Fabaceae. It is a native plant from China through Southeast Asia to the Indian subcontinent. Other common names include orchid tree and mountain ebony.
The Indian name "Guggulu" means "one who protects against disease." According to Ayurvedic traditions, Guggulu resin is highly valued for its bitter, pungent, sweet and astringent taste that balances all three doshas. Kanchanara Guggulu is a very famous Ayurvedic recipe for women.
